Under the glare of TV cameras the amateur, double handed sailing team of Jeremy Salvesenand Victoria Sanders-Perrin to race their new Class 40 boat, MOWGLI

AmbitionSailing 005

Jeremy Salvesen and Victoria Sanders-Perrin only started sailing back in August 2005 but the bug hit hard and their ambitionswere big from the very beginning. They set their hearts on circumnavigating the globe and signed up totake part in Chay Blyth’s Global Challenge.

When Global Challenge went into liquidation, Salvesen and Sanders-Perrin were determined not to let go of their dream and waste the valuable experience they had gained. They had already undergone Blyth’s rigorous training for the Global Challengeand taken the Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster theory and practical exams, as well as competing in several inshore and offshore races.

Day 5: If It Was Easy, Everyone Would Be Doing It

RozBalmBag

The last few days I have been spoiled. I have been in calm waters, enjoying the company of dolphins, whales, seals, and even the occasional human (the marine biologists at the Farralon Islands). The rowing has been easy, rhythmic and regular, like flat-water rowing. At night I have been gently rocked to sleep by the ocean, so although I’ve only been sleeping about 4 hours a night – while I try to put as many miles as possible between me and the coast – I have woken up feeling relatively refreshed.

New generation will chase Tahiti Race legends

Kathmandu

LOS ANGELES—As the late Fred Kirschner drove his Santa Cruz 70, Kathmandu, across the starting line in the 1994 Tahiti Race he told his crew it was going to be more than just a sailboat race.

“Boys,” he said, according to crew member Chuck Furey of San Diego, “this is the first day of the adventure of your lives.”

For most it would be the only such race or adventure. There hasn’t been another Tahiti Race in the 14 years since nor in the 16 years before. That sets it apart for the crews on the five boats scheduled to start the Transpacific Yacht Club’s 13th running of the 3,571-nautical mile chase to Papeete on Sunday, June 22, off Point Fermin in San Pedro.

RAIN FAILS TO DAMPEN SPIRITS ON DAY ONE

VolvoMelges24WorldsD1

At the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda in Porto Cervo, Sardinia the teams competing for the Volvo Melges 24 World Championship 2008 experienced atypical Sardinian weather conditions as rain lashed the area on day one of the two day Pre-World Championship Regatta.

Despite the unpleasant weather thirty seven teams elected to take part in this first day of Pre-World competition and enjoyed one excellent and closely fought race. Racing was scheduled to start at 11.30 but the wind was light and shifting and it wasn’t until 13.05 that racing eventually got underway following one postponed start attempt and two general recalls.
