To date the Spice Race, (starting on November 15th, 2008 from the Solent), has had nearly 20 serious enquiries from Class 40 and IRC yachts, and more are expected. Interest has come from all over the world including; China, Norway, South Africa, Germany, France and the UK. As well as boats wanting to race, there have been enquiries from people wanting to charter boats and individuals looking for crew positions both paid and paying.

Sinn Fein sails home with a boat load of silver

Dateline: Hamilton, Bermuda. 29. 6. 08. Peter S Rebovich and his crew from Sinn Fein, the classic Cal 40 were the toast of Hamilton last night, after scooping up much of the silverware from this year’s Newport Bermuda Race. Their haul included the St. David’s Lighthouse, one of the most coveted prizes in offshore racing, together with the new North Rock Beacon Trophy for the top finisher in both the Gibbs Hill and St. David’s Lighthouse Divisions under the IRC rating system. The North Rock Beacon Trophy was donated by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and awarded for the first time on Saturday evening.

ISAF Sailing World Cup Set To Launch For 2008-2009

The first ISAF Sailing World Cup is set to launch at the end of 2008 bringing a new annual series of sailing to the international sports calendar. The World Cup will be open to the sailing events chosen for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Sailing Competitions.

Incorporating existing major events, the series will kick off with Sail Melbourne, Australia in December 2008, followed by the Rolex Miami OCR, USA; the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofia MAPFRE, Palma, Spain; Semaine Olympique Francaise, Hyeres, France; the Delta Lloyd Regatta, Medemblik, the Netherlands; Kiel Week, Germany; and Skandia Sail for Gold, Weymouth, Great Britain. Additional events may join the series in future years. The Notice of Series for the ISAF Sailing World Cup, including details of the scoring system, will be posted on 21 July 2008.

A record-matching fleet is due to take to the water tomorrow for the first inshore races of the 2008 Rolex Commodores’ Cup. Organised by the Royal Ocean Racing Club, the event will see 45 yachts, divided into 15 three boat teams, representing six nations competing in what is the world’s premier event for cruiser racers. The crews, who are almost entirely amateur, will race over the next week on a mixture of courses: windward-leewards in the Solent, a long offshore and – new for this year – a race around the Isle of Wight.

Further to the watermaker issue, somebody suggested that maybe I should abandon my voyage. With apologies and all due respect to that person, this really made me smile.

As I said in the podcast yesterday morning, this is not like a big city marathon, where I could just decide, “Hey, this isn’t going so well, maybe ocean rowing isn’t the sport for me after all” – then pull over to the side, stop running, and catch a bus to the finish.

As the Cagliari edition of the Melges 32 Audi Sailing Series 2008 continued today Stefano Leporati?s ?Kismet? moved up the leaderboard with an impressive 2,1,1, scoreline to claim third place in the overall standings. Savino Formentini aboard ?Bitipi? closed the gap on overnight leader ?Uka Uka Racing? to only one point by winning the first race and placing fourth and third in the subsequent races.

New York has scored the fifth victory of their Clipper 07-08 Round the World Yacht Race campaign to consolidate their overall lead in the competition. The yacht crossed the finish line at Crosshaven, County Cork, Ireland at 1159 local time (1059 GMT) today at the end of the 2,080-mile race across the North Atlantic from Nova Scotia, Canada.
