RNLI lifeboat crew members operating on the River Thames welcomed a special guest last week when the Lord Mayor of the City donned a crew kit for a visit to Tower Lifeboat Station.

 

Alderman Ian Luder, officially the Lord Mayor of the City of London, met the crew members at Tower lifeboat station on London’s Embankment on Thursday (March 26), to find out more about the lifesaving work they do on what is the UK’s busiest inland waterway.

Sunderland RNLI launch after dog rescue effort almost leads to tragedy

Volunteers based at Sunderland RNLI Lifeboat Station were amongst the emergency services that were called into action earlier this evening, after Police received reports of two men and two dogs in difficulty in the sea at Seaburn.

Shortly before six o’clock this evening [Sunday, 29th March] Humber Coastguard contacted the Operations Manager at Sunderland RNLI to request the immediate launch of their D class Inshore Lifeboat.

Redcar RNLI go to the aid of boat aground on rocks

The RNLI lifeboats from Redcar were launched today (Sunday 29 March 2009, 1.45pm) to go to the assistance of a dive boat which had run aground on rocks offshore from the lifeboat station.

The 6 metre-long dive boat, with 5 people on board, was washed onto rocks while the skipper was attempting to make his way back to Redcar through a passage called the Luff Way.During the attempt the boat was picked up by a large wave and dumped onto the rocks, leaving it high and dry about an hour and a half after low tide.

The seven astronauts from space shuttle Discovery’s STS-119 mission are back home in Houston. The STS-119 crew took off from NASA Kennedy Space Center’s Shuttle Landing Facility in small commuter jets NASA uses at about 1:45 p.m. EDT on Sunday afternoon. The astronauts are scheduled to take part in the traditional Crew Return Ceremony at NASA Johnson Space Center’s Ellington Field at about 5 p.m. EDT.

It was a case of “follow my leader” as the World ARC fleet gathered together for one last time for the journey from Marigot Bay to Rodney Bay, St . Lucia, for the official finish of World ARC 2008/09. Having cruised up through the southern Caribbean to rendezvous at St.Lucia’s Marigot Bay last week, the final 10 nautical miles of their 23,000nm round the world voyage were covered in a spirit of festive fun with a Parade of Sail taking the yachts to their final destination at Rodney Bay Marina, where this incredible adventure began back in January 2008.

Lease Corporation International Group Orders 20 Bombardier CSeries Jetliners With Options to Purchase a Further 20

France Do The Double Again At ISAF Nations Cup Grand Final

Skippers Damien Iehl and Claire Leroy led the French teams to victory at Porto Alegre, Brazil as they won the 2009 ISAF Nations Cup in both Open and Women’s divisions.

France have again proved themselves a nation of match racing excellence as the teams of Damien Iehl (FRA) and Claire Leroy (FRA) both came back from 1-0 deficits to repeat the double French success at the last Nations Cup in 2006. The world’s top match racing nations have been put to the test through a series of Regional Finals held around the globe and this week’s Grand Final in Porto Alegre, Brazil, and again it is the French who have prevailed in both competitions.

Africa SAR coverage extended with commissioning of regional search and rescue sub-centres in Tanzania and Seychelles

Further key links in the plan to provide effective search and rescue (SAR) coverage off the coast of Africa have been established, with the commissioning of two search and rescue sub-centres that will operate in conjunction with the existing regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mombasa, Kenya.

 

The two sub-centres, in Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania and Victoria, Seychelles, were commissioned on 25 and 27 March, respectively, by the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Efthimios E. Mitropoulos, and the Transport Ministers of the respective countries.
