Baltimore RNLI all-weather lifeboat Hilda Jarrett was launched at 01:01 this morning. She was responding to an alert from the Coastguard concerning a report of a yacht disabled and adrift south-east of Galley Head near Clonakility. The 35ft performance cruiser had been on passage from Crosshaven to Schull when her rudder failed, possibly due to striking a floating object. The Hilda Jarrett arrived on-scene at 03:00 hours. Under the direction of Kieran Cotter, a tow was quickly established. Due to the disabled steering on the yacht the towing speed was no more than 5-6 knots. After 22 miles and 4 and half hours the two vessels finally reached the safety of Baltimore Harbour at 07:30. The stricken yacht was safely secured to the Baltimore lifeboats afloat mooring, and the Hilda Jarret was rehoused by her weary crew of Sean McCarthy, Micheal Cotrell, Diarmuid Collins, Jerry Smith, Brian McSweeney.
