When mission managers yell, “Touchdown!” chances are that they are celebrating the arrival of a spacecraft on a planetary surface. When National Football League players yell it, it means something completely different. But did you know that NASA also has made a few plays on the football field? When it comes to protecting athletes and outreach, the space agency does not sit on the sidelines.
On Jan. 30, 2014, beginning at 8:31 a.m EST, the moon moved between NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, and the sun, giving the observatory a view of a partial solar eclipse from space. Such a lunar transit happens two to three times each year. This one lasted two and one half hours, which is the longest ever recorded. When the next one will occur is as of yet unknown due to planned adjustments in SDO’s orbit.

BAE Systems launches first Jackson Offshore PSV
January 30, 2014—BAE Systems has launched the first of four platform supply vessels it is building for Jackson Offshore Operators, LLC. The launch ceremony at BAE Systems’ Heckscher Drive, Jacksonville, FL, shipyard included representatives from both companies. The M/V Breeze will remain at BAE Systems’ shipyard to complete construction prior to delivery in May. The second ship, Hull 256, will be delivered in September. Two additional vessels are under contract and will be completed in 2015.

Sailors were rewarded for their patience and hours of onshore preparation with a full day of inconsistent and challenging conditions on Thursday at the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Cup Miami. The pressure was on, to complete three to four races per fleet on Thursday to catch up to the desired race totals.
