The sun shone brightly in the Yorkshire skies as the former RAF Church Fenton, now Leeds East Airport, opened its gates for its first major air display since 1994, with large crowds arriving by both car and rail, in anticipation of the day’s activities. The planning of the organisers had provided an impressive line-up of WW2 piston, and early era jet aircraft performing for the crowds. An international presence was provided by the Mig 15 from Norway.

The star of the show however, was Avro Vulcan XH558, performing the first of her final 3 public displays of the modern era, not only on her own, but in a special formation flight with the Gnat Display Team, an emotional event for 2 reasons.

First, it was XH558’s final formation flight before she is finally grounded, but also because it occurred without the presence of a third Gnat aircraft, the former Red Arrow flown by Kevin Whyman, which was unfortunately lost in an accident earlier in the year that very sadly resulted in Kevin’s death. After the initial flypasts were completed, the trio performed a flypast in missing man formation, to commemorate the loss of such a skilled display pilot. The crowd responded with spontaneous applause, thanking the formation for this memorial flight. A huge thank you must be given to both of the teams for arranging this memorable flight.

While the Gnats landed, XH558 prepared to perform her first and last solo display flight over Church Fenton since her return to flight. Flown by Martin Withers, with Kev Rumens as co-pilot and Jonathan Lazzari in the AEO’s seat, XH558 wowed the crowd with her display. The pride and passion was evident in the watching crowd, as they stood in complete
silence, nobody moving, thousands of faces staring intently at the one aircraft that can create the now legendary Vulcan Effect. Inevitably this year, the crowd at Church Fenton also felt the huge disappointment and loss from knowing that they will never see the Spirit of Great Britain flying again.

As XH558 climbed towards the heavens for the final time, spontaneous applause once again broke out, this time joined by the lump in the throat and thousands of teary eyes, a sense of finality spreading as she left the Church Fenton skies, heading for her home at Robin Hood Airport. But, once again, we must look at the positives, the Delta Lady has not said her final goodbye just yet, there is still an opportunity to see this icon of British aviation history, perform again. Next week she will perform her final 2 public displays, first at the Heritage Motor Museum, Gaydon, followed by The Shuttleworth Collection at Old Warden, and then she will perform her Final Farewell Tour on the 11th and 12th of October.
We are now approaching end of an era for The Mighty Vulcan XH558. Finally, the story of another Vulcan must be mentioned, that of XM655. Her Maintenance and Preservation Society had a stand at the Coventry Club Day, however she was mistakenly missed off that report. The third from last Vulcan to enter RAF service, preserved as the last Olympus 301 powered Vulcan in ground running condition, based at Wellesbourne Airfield. Her future is uncertain with plans for the airfield to be replaced with a housing estate. If you wish to prevent the loss of the airfield and another Vulcan with a fine historic pa to find out how you can donate or help the team, please visit  www.xm655.com

We apologise for the lack of flight updates on social media last weekend,

We have released four types of Final Flight Sponsor shares, ranging from £60 all the way through to £558.

Each level comes with exclusive rewards that will give those that support them a lasting memory of the final days of flight and can give you close access to the team that made not only the restoration, but eight-seasons of flight possible – backed by a hugely supportive public.

Thankfully, we are already seeing support of this initiative that was released in our last postal mailing, but now is the time we need to consolidate funding to investigate what might be possible in October.
