It has been said the that closure of FAA and RAF SAR Sea King flights was a necessary cost cutting exercise, but closure of these valuable services was a cheap price cut. The final costing may be an increase because reducing SAR cover leads to increasing loss that more than cancels any price reduction. Some of that loss is human life which is priceless.

Loonie Left attacks on Trump expose the real problem – Political Correctness

loony-left-9.jpg

When Trump suggested a temporary ban on Muslims being allowed into the US it brought a deluge of protest from the European Loonie Left and calls to ban him from visiting Britain and Europe. The Scottish Nazi Party even went so far as to strip him of honorary tasks bestowed by Scotland. Naturally, US Democrat politicians also tried to exploit the statement in an attempt to damage the one Republican Presidential candidate they fear. All very predictable and showing more of what the Loonie Left is responsible for than what Trump stands for.

KPMG’s predictions for 2016 for the cyber security industry

cyber_warfare

Each year, companies interested in cyber threats publish similar documents to that reproduced below. Each year governments claim to be doing ‘something’ about the fastest rising global crimes. Sadly, not much has changed. More than 25 years ago, cyber security specialists warned governments of the potential threats and the need to both legislate and support development of technology to prevent the establishment of this very costly crime wave. Unfortunately, politicians failed to act and the IT and communications industries failed to take action on the grounds that it would disrupt marketing programs and hit the profit margins. There are always excuses for not taking risk management seriously. Even given this serious level of threat and neglect, figures estimating cyber crime have consistently fallen well below the actual crime levels. This is because many systems, particularly domestic systems, have virtually no protection and many attacks go completely unseen, but also because some organizations, notably banks, conceal the level of attacks for fear that this will damage customer confidence. Lets make 2016 the year when everyone wakes up and starts acting before the problem becomes too severe to get under full control.  Editor

30th December 2015

  • Looking ahead at the cyber security landscape for next year, David Ferbrache, Technical Director at KPMG’s cyber security practice, points out that law enforcement is catching up with hackers and in response they are employing smarter methods of attack:

Revealing the scale of the problem

“The recent field trial by the Office of National Statistics suggested that there could have been over 7.5 million cyber offences against individuals last year. 2016 will see cybercrime finally find its place in our official statistics. I doubt that even the headline grabbing statistics which follow will capture the true scale of cybercrime – with many crimes against organisations remaining unreported.

Reading the Alphabet From Space

Reading the Alphabet From Space

River in shape of letter 'y' flowing through field of elongated landforms or yardangs
NASA’s Earth Observatory has tracked down images resembling all 26 letters of the English alphabet using only NASA satellite imagery and astronaut photography. In this image, the letter ‘Y’ is for yardangs, elongated landforms sculpted by erosion and similar to sand dunes, but instead comprised of sandstone or siltstone. On December 25, 2000, the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this false-color image of the Ugab River running through what appears to be a field of yardangs in northern Namibia.See the entire feature: Reading the ABCs From Space
