Navy officers face charges following destroyer collisions
January 17, 2018 — Commander Bryce Benson, former commander of USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62), and Cmdr. Alfredo J. Sanchez, former commander of USS John S. McCain (DDG-56), are among those facing a mix of charges —including negligent homicide — in relation to the collisions in which the two vessels were involved last year.  The June 17 collision between the Fitzgerald and ACX Crystal resulted in the death of seven sailors. The August 21 collision between the McCain and a chemical tanker resulted in the death of 10 sailors.

Rolls-Royce may sell off commercial marine business
Rolls-Royce said that it is looking at the “strategic options” for its commercial marine operation and planning a reduction from five operating businesses to three core units that will see its naval marine and nuclear submarines operations consolidated with its existing defense business.

Methanol fuel cells power German excursion vessel

According to SerEnergy, the vessel’s energy system is a hybrid constellation consisting of a fuel cell system and a battery pack, where the fuel cells work as a range extender allowing the vessel to sail for an entire day without fueling. Using waste heat from the fuel cell to drive the methanol reformation process leads to a high electrical efficiency between 40-50%.
