2017/18 AY Grand Prix Event

Rain interrupts play…

11:01:2018 Langkawi, Malaysia: With good intentions and a favourable weather forecast, the fleet headed out to contest the ‘Round the Island’ race. The starts went ok, in a 5 knot North Easterly but soon faded and the yachts proceeded in slow motion as they gybed downwind. The big boats made it down to the bottom of the island in reasonable time, leaving the rest of the fleet on the horizon. While this was going on, gray clouds were building up over the tall peaks, which didn’t look good for the return leg up Kua Harbour. A slight wind shift and increase in speed and the smaller yachts descended on the turning gate with glee. Whilst making their way towards the harbour entrance, down came the rain, turning the course into a parking lot and dried up all the fun. Fortunately for most the classes, the times were taken as they passed the gates and the end result was calculated from the last gate. The Racing Class had to endure the painfully slow leg up the harbour, in the rain to the finish and Frank Pong’s 2014 race record stands for another year.


No need for a canting keel in the light wind, as Philip Turner’s Reichel-Pugh 66 Alive took the lead in favourable conditions and played the shifts to their advantage. Never more than a couple hundred meters apart, Kevin Whitcraft’s TP52 THA 72 clung on around the course and eventually they both found their own parking lot. The Royal Malaysian Armed Forces Sail Association on their DK47 Uranus skippered by Salleh Ahmad made up lost ground, to close in on the leaders and spoil THA 72 clean sheet by a mere 23 seconds and relegate them to 2nd place. The Royal Malaysian Armed Forces on Farr 520 Zuhal skippered by Hairolnizam Hat also clocked in front of Alive and turned the line honours victory into 4th place.

Vincent Chan’s Titan 36 Mata Hari KL Registry gybed and set the spinnaker at the start line and moved away in fresh breeze. The Japanese on Kazuki Kihara’s First 40.7 Char Chan were slow to follow suite and stayed on a long leg to seaward. By gybing down the center of the course Mata Hari KL Registry were first across the first gate, as Char Chan were still out on a limb and struggling to get back to the course. Geoff Masters Mills 41 Meraki joined in and managed to catch Mata Hari KL Registry in the parking lot to claim IRC 1 line honours at the second gate. When the IRC rating calculations were made Chan’s Mata Hari KL Registry came out on top with Char Chan recovering in 2nd place and Meraki in 3rd. This result ties Mata Hari KL Registry and Char Chan on 6 points for the overall lead. Meraki climbs up into 3rd overall and ruing the first race retirement.

Not constrained by windward/leeward course restrictions, Amir Zohri’s J92 S RSYC Nijinsky found the long reaching legs to their liking and crossed the first gate slightly in front of Niels Degenkolw’s X 3/4 ton Mk2 Phoenix. They then extended and managed to hold on till the shortened finish gate but when the IRC ratings are applied Degenkolw’s X 3/4 ton Mk2 Phoenix again came out on top for their fourth win. Although Jeremy Camps Impala 28 OOD Old Pulteney Blue Angel was 27 minutes behind, they managed to come within 2 minutes of toppling RSYC Nijinsky but 3rd was the outcome and stay 2nd overall with severe difficulties in catching the leader Phoenix.

Although what appeared to be a horizon job for Robert van Paridon’s 12.81m trimaran Tantrum Too, Gerhard Pils Pulse 600 Fetz Ma made some gains in the late stages to eclipse the bigger craft again and tie on 6 points for the overall Multihull title. Bob McIntyre’s Stealth 13 Allegro made a last ditch effort but ended in 3rd place and holds onto 3rd overall.

Despite a slow start, the Japanese on Yasuto Fuda’s Yamaha 31 Fortissimo X came good at the end, to win their first Club Class race. Philip Auger’s Davidson 35 Sophia led for the entire race but is relegated to 2nd place. Third place for the Russians on Stas Pechenkin’s Jeanneau One Design Southern Breeze 3 is enough to keep them at the top of the table and with the severe juggling of places, they extend their lead by 6 points from Sophia and Fortissimo X in the overall stakes.

Despite wallowing in the light patches without spinnaker A’dale Adham Ayahudin’s Oyster 55 Chantique managed to reach the gate in just under 5 1/2 hours to win the Ocean Rover class. Eighteen minutes latter Jack Christensen’s Bavaria 49 Linda claimed 2nd place with Bernard Di Tullio’s Indulgence, 3/4 of an hour further back in 3rd place. They are in the same order in the overall stakes.

Racing continues tomorrow and hopefully the weather forecast is better than today and the rain stays away, for a full round of races to be completed.
