#OGR2023 At the UK Yachting Journalist Association Yachtsman of the year awards dinner Southampton… Clive Ponsford (pilot who flew Barry Pickthall to photograph the start of many of the Whitbread/Volvo Race starts in the UK) Sir Chay Blyth, (skipper of the elapsed time winning yacht Great Britain II in the first Whitbread Race, and now Patron of the Ocean Globe Race) Aida Valceanu ( PR & Events OGR) Don McIntyre (founder of the OGR) Barry Pickthall veteran journalist who covered all the Whitbread/Volvo Races, and Ambassador of the OGR) Laurel Holland (Nee Alan-Williams who raced with Dame Naomi James in the 2-handed transAtlantic Race) David Alan-Williams (Whitbread veteran on Burton Cutter in first race and designer/crewman aboard FCF Challenger in the 1985/6 Whitbread Race, designer Steinlager 1 winner 1988 Around Aust. Race.Front Row: Sheila Westbrook (wife of Barry Pickthall and keen follower of the GGR); Tapio Lengtinen (Whitbread veteran on Skopbank of Finland in 1981/2 Race, 5th placed finisher in the 2018 GGR, and skipper of the Swan 55 Galiana in the 2023 OGR, Isabelle Andrieu, from the Swan 65 Translated, entered in the 2023 OGR….A fantastic night with all awards of the event won by women sailors!
